Crushing News

Today the New York State Senate voted against legalizing same sex marriage by a vote of 38 to 24. I'm having a hard time putting into words the emotions that I am feeling. It's completely devastating that our lawmakers would reject a bill thats sole purpose is to treat all New Yorkers equally. We're not asking for special treatment, just for equality.

I'm deeply saddened and basically speechless :(

It's no consolation, but here in California I think the electoral loss shocked us into more effective organizing/awareness. This is a battle we will win in our lifetimes and your marriage will be legally affirmed.

If you want a list of the Democrats who voted against equality so the vote-them-out process can begin, see the end of the Gawker article here: http://gawker.com/5417335/new-york-state-senate-votes-down-gay-marriage

When I heard the news I immediately thought about you... :-( Don't know what to say but sorry. It's something I take for granted here, it's been legal for a decade, and I couldn't even tell you how great it was to see my sister marry her soul mate... Even while being straight I take it very personally...

It WILL happen, you know. Eventually. But in the meantime, bleh.

Dawn ... I don't understand your country. You have a proud and wonderful history, your country overcame slavery, then segregation, has amazing clothing (okay, not on the scale of overcoming slavery), is beautiful and stunning ... and yet, you have no public healthcare system, gay marriage is illegal, and everyone has the right to carry guns around. In Canada, public healthcare is a staple of our self-identity. Gay marriage is not debated (although there are of course pockets who still try to debate it, it is generally accepted by most). And we can't carry guns. We can own guns, but they have to be registered, and they can't be carried (legally, unless you're going hunting).

So, I have to say. I don't understand your country. I just don't get it.

But keep up the fight. It'll happen. Just like it took the US a little longer to ban slavery than Canada, it happened. So hold your head up high and remember that we're all equal and we all deserve equal rights.

I don't get the counter-arguments that children are best when they have a mother and father. Um, what about widowed parents? Or divorced parents? Or (God forbid) orphans? They can still be raised to be amazing people. And any child would be blessed to have two loving parents of the same gender rather than two abusive or negligent "husband-and-wife" parents.

So let me conclude this rambling comment by saying hold your head up high because it'll come.

Thank you all so much for your encouraging, caring and thoughtful words. I can't express how much it means to me to have you all rally around with such wonderful support. You guys are all the best! xo

A Los Angeles Love - thanks so much for that list! i researched each and every senator that rejected the vote. especially the 8 Dems...it's truly shocking!

And Krista - I totally agree with you. The US is way behind. J and I have very seriously considered moving to Canada in the past and we haven't ruled it out!

I'm feeling a little less deflated today and more empowered so I've decided to attend the rally in support of marriage equality in NYC tonite. Chin up! :)

I'm so sad :-(. It wasn't even as close as expected. This sort of news is so disheartening, especially after your own wedding.

Krista - sometimes I don't understand it either. I grew up about twenty minutes from Ontario and sometimes I wish I had just moved over there.

Dawn....I am so disappointed, so bewildered. Today I appreciate being in Canada and I can only hope that one day, the US will follow suite. Hope the rally went well tonight.
